Parmigiani Fleurier refines quiet luxury with Tonda PF Alta Rosa

In the quiet valleys of the Val-de-Travers, where the rhythms of Swiss watchmaking still dictate the pace of life, Parmigiani Fleurier has always taken a more contemplative path than most. Founded by master watchmaker and restorer Michel Parmigiani, the maison grew out of a respect for horological heritage — the kind that comes from decades spent restoring some of the world’s most historical timepieces. That shaped Parmigiani’s outlook: watches must possess technical integrity, but also a sense of aesthetic equilibrium.

It is an approach that found perhaps its modern articulation in the Tonda PF collection when it arrived in 2021. At a time when the luxury sports watch category had become crowded with muscular cases, the Tonda PF appeared almost disarmingly restrained. Its elegance came from proportion, surface treatment and detail rather than overt design theatrics.

The 36mm iteration of the Tonda PF carries that idea even further. It returns to a more classical watchmaking scale, where balance and comfort take precedence over visual impact. In an industry preoccupied with ever-larger cases, a 36mm watch can feel almost radical in its composure. The latest expression of this format is the Tonda PF Automatic 36mm Alta Rosa.

The dial introduces a rose-toned hue that feels calm, shifting gently as light moves across its surface. Much of its personality comes from the Grain d’Orge guilloché that defines the Tonda PF dial architecture. Here, the hand-guilloché pattern acts as a delicate mediator between light and metal. Viewed through the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the surface seems to breathe softly, revealing depth as the eye lingers.

The dial layout remains faithful to the collection’s disciplined aesthetic. Applied hour markers in rhodium-plated 18-karat gold punctuate the surface, while the skeletonised delta-shaped hands maintain clarity without disturbing the overall harmony.

The stainless-steel case measures 36mm across and 8.6mm in height. Its surfaces alternate between polished and satin finishes, allowing light to travel smoothly along the contours. Framing the dial is the collection’s signature knurled bezel crafted from platinum 950 — a detail that has become a quiet calling card of the Tonda PF line. Beneath the refinement lies practicality, with a screw-in crown and water resistance rated to 100 metres. Turn the watch over, and the mechanical heart reveals itself. The PF770 automatic calibre — developed within Parmigiani Fleurier’s workshops — beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a 60-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, the finishing speaks of traditional watchmaking discipline: Côtes de Genève across the bridges, bevelled edges, and a skeletonised oscillating weight in 22-carat rose gold with alternating polished and sandblasted surfaces.

None of this is dramatic in the conventional sense. And that is the point. Alta Rosa does not attempt to reinvent the Tonda PF; instead, it refines the collection’s vocabulary with a new tonal nuance.
