Messi suffers injury scare weeks before World Cup

MIAMI — Lionel Messi sparked fresh injury concerns ahead of the FIFA World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer clash against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

The Argentina captain appeared uncomfortable midway through the second half and was replaced in the 73rd minute after clutching the back of his left leg during the match in wet conditions in Miami.

Messi walked normally as he headed straight down the tunnel, although the sight of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner leaving the pitch immediately raised fears in Argentina just weeks before the World Cup begins on June 11.

Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos later attempted to ease concerns, suggesting the substitution was largely precautionary due to fatigue and the heavy playing surface.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a medical report yet, but he was really fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match.

“The pitch was heavy and when there’s any doubt, you don’t take risks.”

The 38-year-old has not officially confirmed he will feature for Argentina national football team at the upcoming World Cup, although he is widely expected to lead the defending champions in what would be a record-equalling sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

Argentina are set to announce their squad next week ahead of their opening World Cup match against Algeria national football team on June 16.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi’s workload has been carefully managed amid recurring fitness concerns, particularly involving hamstring problems that have sidelined him at different stages over the past two seasons.

Despite the scare, there has been no official indication yet that the injury is serious.
