Ronaldo left heartbroken as Al Nassr lose Asian final to Gamba Osaka

RIYADH — Cristiano Ronaldo’s wait for major continental glory in Saudi Arabia ended in heartbreak on Saturday night after Al Nassr fell to a shock 1-0 defeat against Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final.

Under the lights at King Saud University Stadium, Ronaldo and Al Nassr dominated possession, created chances and threw everything at the Japanese side but one moment from Deniz Hümmet proved enough to hand Gamba Osaka their first Asian crown since 2008.

For Ronaldo, it was another crushing near-miss in a Saudi Arabia chapter that has delivered goals, records and global attention, but still lacks the defining international trophy many expected when he arrived in Riyadh in late 2022.

The Al Nassr captain endured a frustrating evening in front of goal, seeing multiple opportunities denied as Gamba goalkeeper Rui Araki produced a standout display under immense pressure.

Al Nassr began the final aggressively, pushed forward by a roaring home crowd desperate to witness history.

Sadio Mané and Abdulrahman Ghareeb threatened early, before Ronaldo himself went close during a dominant first-half spell that saw the Saudi side pin Gamba deep inside their own half.

But despite Al Nassr’s control, it was Gamba Osaka who struck first.

Against the run of play in the 30th minute, Hümmet latched onto a pass from Issam Jebali before turning sharply and firing low into the corner to stun the Riyadh crowd.

The goal transformed the mood inside the stadium.

Al Nassr responded with relentless pressure, but wasteful finishing and disciplined Japanese defending kept the deficit intact heading into halftime.

The second half quickly turned into wave after wave of Al Nassr attacks.

João Félix struck the post with Al Nassr’s closest chance of the night, while Mohamed Simakan missed a free header from close range.

Ronaldo also came agonizingly close late on, only for Gamba defender Genta Miura to produce a crucial block inside the penalty area.

As the clock ticked down, desperation swept through Al Nassr’s attacks.

Crosses, long-range shots and late corners continued to rain into the box, but Gamba Osaka held firm through nearly 100 minutes of pressure before scenes of jubilation erupted at the final whistle.

For Al Nassr, the defeat delivered another painful setback only days after their dramatic title-race collapse against Al Hilal in the Capital Derby.

For Ronaldo, meanwhile, the search for a defining Saudi trophy goes on.
