LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the Iran war is “not our war” and stressed that the United Kingdom will not be drawn into the conflict.

Speaking at a press conference in Downing Street on Wednesday, Starmer said his government is “working at pace” to support de-escalation efforts, while acknowledging the conflict will have long-term implications for the UK.

He said a meeting to be hosted this week by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will focus on advancing maritime security in the Gulf.

Following the meeting, UK military planners will assess how to “marshal our capabilities” to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains accessible and secure once the fighting subsides.

Asked whether the public should change their behavior amid rising energy concerns, Starmer said the government is “carefully” monitoring the situation.

He also emphasized the need for closer cooperation with European allies on defense, security, and economic matters.

“Whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise, I’m going to act in the British national interest in all decisions that I make,” Starmer said.

“That’s why I’ve been absolutely clear that this is not our war, and we’re not going to get dragged into it,” he added.

Starmer’s remarks came after Trump told Britain’s Daily Telegraph that he is considering withdrawing the US from NATO, citing allies’ refusal to support the war on Iran.
